About Me

Hi! My name is Tom Haynes. I'm a journalist living in London. Since graduating from King's College London in 2018 I've worked in digital media as an editor, freelancer, and reporter. I currently work as Money reporter for the Daily Telegraph.

This site contains some of the articles I'm most proud of. It's an eclectic (and by no means exhaustive) mix, taking in hard local news, reported features about digital culture, and first-person pieces accounts of using EastEnders quotes as chat-up lines on dating apps. I hope it speaks to the breadth of my five years' experience in this industry.

Covered the cost of living crisis, with a focus on Net Zero and hosehold utility bills. Pitched news stories directly to the news desk, and placed many of them in the front section of the paper, including page 1. Also worked on features and splashes for the weekend Money supplement, with a heavy focus on case studies. The online Money section was revamped with a heavy focus on guides this year, and much of the guides to do with Net Zero were produced by me.

Reported live from crime scenes, inquests, breaking incidents, liaising with emergency services for updates and speaking to witnesses on the ground. Published exclusive local stories with strong case studies later picked up by other Reach sites such as The Mirror, and syndicated to The Sun and Daily Mail.

Mentored and trained student journalists and fact-checked news stories, ensuring copy was legal and well-presented. Pitched and published features and news stories on topics affecting 18-24s. Published scoops which were picked up by The Guardian, The Times, the BBC, New York Post and The Sun.
